Major
district town Schwarzenberg in the Ore Mountains
Schwarzenberg
is a major district town in the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) county in
Saxony.
Having been established as a fortification in the 12th century to
protect a trade route, the
small mountain town evolved into the center of the same-named lordship.
Until
the end of
the German Democratic Republic, the town became the most important
production
location for washing machines in Eastern Europe. Schwarzenberg became
famous
nationwide in 1987 due to Stefan Heym‘s novel of the same name, which
played during the
post-war time in the town, which was unoccupied for several weeks.
Having about 19.000
inhabitants,
Schwarzenberg
is today a location for small and medium-sized businesses and is
developing in the sector of tourism as the pearl of the Ore Mountains
and as a member of
the league of towns Silberberg.
